Scope and Background
ISSS-7 is the 7th in a series of international symposia organized by The Surface Science Society of Japan. This symposium highlights recent achievements in surface and interfacial science, and related fields. Major topics include the structure, electronic states, and dynamic processes of a wide range of surfaces and interfaces, novel instrumentation and methodological development, and applications of surface science to green technologies leading renewable energy for sustainable growth. Interdisciplinary studies and discussion on the future directions of the fields are strongly encouraged.

Venue
The symposium place, Matsue city in Shimane prefecture, is one of Japanese mythological areas.
Kojiki (A.D. 712) the first history book of Japan said that the deities who created Japan were active around there, for example Susano-o-no-Mikoto deity fought and killed Yamata-no-Orochi, a gigantic serpent with eight heads and eight tails; this is one scene in the ISSS-7 poster and banquet.
You can also see many kinds of unearthed articles at Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo. For examples, a bell-shaped bronze vessel relic, Dotaku, is supposed to have been put to some ceremonial use. A comma-shaped stone bead, Magatama, was used as ornamental necklaces in ancient times.
Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine (older than 8th century, main shrine: national treasure) was dedicated to one of the deities. This Grand Shrine is one of Japan's most important shrines.
At the beginning of the 17th century, a feudal lord built a formidable castle, Matsue castle, on the banks of Lake Shinji. The castle is one of only 12 remaining original castles nationwide and you can enjoy the sightseeing boat tour circles the castlefs historical moats. The scenic beauty of the lake Shinji is especially magnificent and the views are worth seeing. The sun begins to set, and exquisite colors of tinting appear in the water and sky of Lake Shinji. The author Lafcadio Hearn described the beauty of Matsue and Lake Shinji, blessed with an abundance of beautiful natural scenery.
Adachi museum of art is famous for the best Japanese garden chosen by the U.S. magazine Sukiya Living. There are many other nice places in and around Matsue. Facing onto the relaxed atmosphere and appearance, Matsue has a calming influence on residents and visitors alike.

The Symposium will be held at Shimane Prefectural Convention Center (Kunibiki Messe), Matsue, Shimane (http://www.kunibikimesse.jp/14.html).
The nearest airport is Izumo Airport; it is well connected from Tokyo (Haneda; 80 min), Osaka (Itami; 60 min), and Fukuoka (65 min) airports. Yonago Airport is also available from Tokyo (Haneda; 80 min, Narita; 90 min) and Seoul (Incheon; 70 min). From there, Matsue station is conveniently reached by an airport limousine bus (from Izumo Airport; 30 min, from Yonago Airport; 45 min).
A local express train of Japan Railway Company is also available from Okayama station (2 hr 30 min). From Matsue station it takes about 7 min on foot to get to Kunibiki Messe.
